What to wear for family photos on the beach in Denmark, plus practical tips for preparing toddlers and kids so your session is relaxed, fun and full of real moments.

Most parents worry about two things before a family session: “What on earth do we wear?” and “What if the kids won’t cooperate?”
Good news: both are easier than you think. Here’s everything I tell my clients before a beach session in North Jutland, so you can show up relaxed and enjoy it.
Danish beaches, grey skies and dune grass look beautiful with soft, earthy tones. These palettes work especially well:
Think of the landscape as your colour palette and choose clothes that belong in it.
You don’t need identical outfits. Pick two or three colours that sit well together and mix textures and shades within them. For example: one parent in cream knit, the other in denim, a child in camel and olive. It looks natural, not staged.
The coast is windier and cooler than most people expect, even in summer. Layers keep everyone comfortable and also look great in photos:
Wool, linen, corduroy, denim and soft cotton photograph beautifully in soft light and wind. Flowing dresses and skirts add movement on a windy beach, so if you wear one, add warm tights or leggings underneath.
Wellies, boots and trainers all work. Bare feet are fun for little ones if the weather allows. Decide beforehand, and bring a spare pair of dry socks for the car ride home.

The best family photos are rarely the ones where everyone looks at the camera at once. They’re the ones where a toddler grabs your hand, a big sister laughs at the wind, or everyone is running down the beach. A smooth session isn’t about perfect behaviour. It’s about letting children be children.
Tell your kids in simple terms what’s going to happen: “We’re going to the beach to play, and a friendly lady will take photos while we have fun.” Older children can even help choose a game or a place to explore.
Constantly saying “Look at the camera! Smile!” usually produces stiff, forced expressions. A better approach: play, tickle, race each other to a dune, whisper a silly secret. I’ll guide the session with games and prompts, so you can simply be present with your kids.
It happens in almost every session with little ones, and it’s fine. We take a break, have a snack, cuddle, and start again. Often some of the loveliest, most honest photos come from exactly those moments: a comforting hug, a wobbly lip, a parent’s hand on a small back.
Children pick up on your mood. If you feel relaxed and playful, they will too. Don’t worry about how you look, what to do with your hands, or whether you’re “doing it right.” Walk, talk, hold each other close, and let me take care of the rest.
If your dog is joining us, bring a lead and some treats. A dog adds energy and fun, and children are often more relaxed with their four-legged friend beside them.
Your children’s safety comes first. I don’t publish photos where a child’s face is visible, and if you’d prefer that your kids don’t appear online at all, they won’t. You still receive your full gallery.
