Family Photography on the Beaches of North Jutland

Family photo sessions on North Jutland’s beaches. Locations near Frederikshavn, Sæby, Hirtshals, Hjørring and Aalborg, the best time of year, and how a session works.

North Jutland is made for family photos. The beaches are wide and open, the dunes are wild, and the light changes by the minute. There are no stiff studio poses here. There’s your family, the sea, the wind, and the moments you’ll want to hold on to in ten years

Why a beach session?

Kids relax. Sand, water and open space give children something to do besides “pose nicely.” Running, digging and collecting shells give you real expressions.

You can be yourselves. Wind in your hair, a toddler wobbling across the sand, a dog tearing past..it’s all part of the story.

The backdrop is unbeatable. Dunes, sea and sky create something no studio can copy.

“But what if the weather isn’t perfect?”

This is the question I get most often, and my answer is always the same 🙂 you don’t need sunshine for beautiful family photos.

An overcast sky works like a giant softbox. The light is even and gentle, with no harsh shadows and no squinting. Colours look rich and calm, and the photos feel moody and timeless. Some of my favourite sessions happened under heavy grey skies with the wind pushing in from the sea.

We only reschedule for heavy rain or genuinely unsafe conditions, and we’ll decide that together on the day.

Where to go: beaches and areas by town

Every part of North Jutland has its own character. We’ll choose the exact spot together, depending on weather, crowds and how comfortable your kids are with a short walk.

Frederikshavn

Close to town and easy to reach, which makes it a good choice for families with small children or tight schedules. You get sea, sand and a classic coastal atmosphere without a long drive.

Sæby

A small harbour town with a calm, cosy feel. Beach, harbour and town charm all sit close together, so it works well if you want some variety within one short session.

Hirtshals

This is where the North Sea feels wilder. Expect bigger skies, stronger wind and a dramatic look. It’s perfect for families who want photos that feel raw and cinematic rather than polished.

Hjørring area

The coast around Hjørring has long stretches of open sand and plenty of space. If you want that “edge of the world” feeling, with room for the kids to run and for me to take wide, atmospheric shots, this is a great area to consider.

Two landscapes, two moods

Dunes and beach grass. More intimate and sheltered. Perfect for cuddles, walking together and quieter moments. Marram grass adds texture and movement to the frame.

Wide, open beach. Space, scale and horizon. Your family appears small in a big landscape, which gives the photos a calm, cinematic feel. This works especially well for running, playing and walks with the dog.

I often combine both in one session.

When to book

  • Golden hour (the hour before sunset): soft, warm light and a lovely glow on skin.
  • Morning: quiet beaches and gentle light. Good for early risers and families with little ones.
  • Autumn and winter: you often have the whole beach to yourselves. The light is low, the mood is dramatic, and cosy knitwear looks wonderful.
  • Summer: long days and lots of light, but popular beaches can get busy at weekends, so evenings work best.

Your dog is welcome

Your four-legged family member belongs in the photos. Dogs add movement, humour and heart, and children are often more relaxed with the dog beside them.

Your children’s privacy comes first

I take children’s safety seriously. I don’t publish photos where a child’s face is visible, and if you’d rather your children didn’t appear online at all, they won’t. You still receive the full gallery. What gets shared publicly is always your decision.

How a session works

  1. Get in touch. Tell me when and where you’d like to shoot, who is coming, and whether you’re bringing a dog.
  2. We plan together. We choose the location and time based on weather, light and your family’s needs.
  3. We meet at the beach. The session usually lasts around an hour. We walk, play and talk, and I photograph what happens.
  4. You get your photos. Your edited gallery arrives within 3 weeks, ready to download, print and share.
